Yiqi Meng: Senior Engineering Manager, Revenue Team
What did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be an artist. In college I majored in Computer Science with the plan of going into Computer Graphics but ended up becoming a developer instead.
How did you get into tech?
I was lucky enough to get a graphic design internship during my junior year of college but I ended up coding my UI design and built a web service because the company was so small and needed all the help they could get. Putting my code in front of real people/users was exciting and it’s how I discovered my passion for engineering.
Who has been your biggest mentor?
Nicola Marzolla, the CTO at Code Particle, was my first mentor. He introduced me to web development and taught me useful knowledge that helped me grow my career.
My current mentor is Maria Zhang, the Chief Technology Officer at Tinder. She inspires me to push myself to my limits but also spends time coaching me so I can learn to be a strong leader for my team.
Why did you come to Tinder?
I joined Tinder because I believe in the power that technology has to transform the ways in which people make connections. Also, I’ve always been fascinated with the kind of engineering challenges you face at scale.
What is your role at Tinder?
I lead the Revenue team. Our focus is to build features and infrastructure that provide monetization for Tinder. We’ve released a series of incredible features such as Tinder Plus, Super Like and Boost which helped Tinder become the #2 highest grossing app (excluding games) in the Google Play and App Store!
What is the biggest technical challenge you’re solving right now?
Tinder is currently exploring ways to bring machine learning and artificial intelligence into our products. These are cutting-edge technologies and can be difficult to apply effectively but we’re up for the challenge.
What is the most satisfying part of your job?
Tinder is a place where extraordinary people gather to do their best work. The work is challenging and impactful; and the people are smart, friendly and passionate about the product.
What is your favorite Tinder feature and why?
My favorite Tinder feature is Super Like because it breaks away from the fundamental double opt-in rule on Tinder by encouraging one person to send a stronger signal to another person. This feature was in high demand and continues to be one of the most successful monetization features on the platform!
What are 3 things someone who is considering working at Tinder should know?
- Tinder is growing fast in market share on a global scale, yet the company is small enough that everyone can make an impact.
- Tinder is transparent in sharing its mission, roadmap and performance. This level of openness empowers employees to implement creative solutions to achieve company goals.
- Tinder has great perks! Free meals, massages and yoga classes are a few.
If you could use 3 adjectives to describe Tinder’s culture, what would they be?
Responsible, Fun, Empowering
What is one fun fact about you?
I used to have two cats named Romeo and Juliet, but they never got along.
